GENERAL SANTOS CITY (Philippines News Agency) — Boxing fans will be treated anew to a free and uninterrupted live telecast of “fighting” Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao’s title defense against American brawler Adrien Broner in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Lawyer Arnel Zapatos, city administrator, said Friday the local government has purchased a pay-per-view subscription to allow residents to witness the 70th professional fight of the city’s “favorite son.”

Zapatos said they will open the 5,000-capacity city gymnasium in Barangay Lagao for the Pacquiao-Broner World Boxing Association regular welterweight championship bout.

“We are urging residents to come and avail of this free treat. We will all be there to support our fighting senator,” he said in a radio interview.

The city government has sponsored free live viewing at the city gymnasium during the previous fights of Pacquiao, who grew up in Barangay Labangal here.

Pacquiao had trained at the Pacman Wild Card Gym here and in nearby Sarangani province for the fight.

As in the previous free live viewing of the Pacquiao fights, the city government tapped the city’s 26 barangays for the distribution of tickets, which will guarantee reserved seats inside the gymnasium.

Residents may avail of the tickets for free through their barangay councils on a “first-come, first-served” basis.

Viewing screens will be set up outside the gym for those who could not get the tickets.

Zapatos said the gymnasium’s gates will be open at 8 a.m., about an hour ahead of the expected start of the undercard bouts.

“The actual fights will likely start at around 9 a.m. and continue for the main event around noon,” he added. (PNA)
