New model for enforcing the Animal Protection Act
City Council approved Administration’s proposed model for seven-day-a-week enforcement coverage of the Animal Protection Act today.
“City Council expressed that animal welfare is vitally important to Edmontonians,” said David Aitken, Branch Manager of Community Standards and Neighbourhoods. “Under this proposed model, we will be prepared to manage the challenging and rewarding responsibilities that come with handling animal protection within the city.”
The proposed model will adequately support enforcement with four animal control peace officers and additional staff spread across kennel care, veterinary, clerical, dispatch, 311, legal and educational support.
Administration will now explore options to offset the resource requirements for the service and will submit an unfunded service package for consideration to City Council this April.
Residents can continue to call 311 for animal protection and bylaw concerns or Edmonton Police Services for emergency situations regarding animal abuse.
