PSC opens newly-refurbished lodges for national athletes

MANILA (Philippines News Agency) — After three months of repairs, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) on Thursday announced the opening of the newly-refurbished accommodations for national athletes from some 10 sports associations at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) in Manila and PhilSports Complex in Pasig City.

Dormitory head Rocelle Destura said the athletes of the national sports associations (NSAs), such as weightlifting and wrestling (women), are currently billeted at the RMSC while those from fencing, karatedo and Muay Thai are housed at PhilSports.

“Preparations of rooms for sepak takraw, softball, pencak silat, wushu, and baseball athletes are also on-going as they finalize the compliance needed for lodging,” Destura said.

On Dec. 14, 2019, PSC Executive Director Atty. Guillermo Iroy Jr. announced the transfer of the national athletes to temporary housing facilities to give way to the massive repairs of the dormitories.

PSC Chairman Butch Ramirez said the PSC rented condominium and apartment units for the national team members.

Ramirez said the agency also rented training venues for athletes, whose training facilities at the RMSC and PhilSports are also undergoing renovation.

The repairs of all the dormitories are expected to be finished by September in time for the 30th Southeast Asian Games slated from Nov. 30 to Dec. 11 this year.

Ramirez said stricter rules such as daily monitoring of the athletes will be implemented at the RMSC and PhilSports.

“A big part of being an athlete is discipline, so let us start with keeping our accommodations clean,” said Ramirez, a former coach of the Ateneo de Davao Basketball team before becoming the agency’s head twice over. (PR)
