MANILA (Philippines News Agency) — Former House Speaker Prospero Nograles has passed away, his son, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei Nograles said on Saturday. He was 71.

“Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of you for being a part of Papa Boy Nogie’s life and journey,” the younger Nograles said in a statement.

“Papa passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. May we please ask for your continued prayers. He is finally at peace,” he said.

The cause of death has yet to be released by the family.

Born in Davao City, Nograles studied at the Ateneo de Manila University, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts Degree major in Political Science in 1967, and his Bachelor of Laws degree from the Ateneo de Manila Law School in 1971.

He placed second in the 1971 Bar examinations and successfully ran for a congressional seat five times, representing the first district of Davao City.

He served in the 8th Congress (1989-1992), in the 10th (1995-1998), in the 12th (2001-2004), and in the 13th Congress (2004-2007), where he was the House Majority Leader.

Nograles was elected Speaker in February 2008 while in his fifth term (2007-2010), during the administration of then President and now House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

The Nograleses have four children: the eldest, Kristine Elizabeth, is a medical doctor; Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei, who is also a lawyer; Jericho Jonas, who is a party-list representative; and Margarita Ignacia, who just passed the Bar. (PNA)
