ETS distributing free masks to Edmontonians

News Release

ETS distributing free masks to Edmontonians
Starting Monday, June 15, Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) will begin distributing free non-medical masks to all Edmontonians as part of the provincial government’s mask distribution plan. This will supplement the current distribution of masks through select Alberta drive-thrus.

A total of 500,000 masks were provided by the Government of Alberta to ETS for distribution. Wearing a mask in public helps prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“Wearing a mask on transit is an important measure to help keep our community safe, especially when maintaining a two-metre physical distance is not possible,” says Eddie Robar, ETS Branch Manager. “As transit ridership is steadily increasing, we’re asking Edmontonians to wear a mask to help keep everyone safe.”

Free masks will be handed out, upon request, at four transit centres, and three LRT stations, daily between 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., until all masks have been distributed. Masks will be distributed at the following transit locations:West Edmonton Mall Transit Centre Mill Woods Transit CentreNorthgate Transit CentreCentury Park Transit Centre Churchill LRT Station Clareview LRT StationKingsway LRT Station

Masks will also be provided to DATS Operators and Transit Peace Officers for distribution to Edmontonians upon request.

Everyone is welcome to drop into one of the designated transit centres or LRT stations to pick up a mask, whether using transit or not. Each person will be provided with one package, containing four free non-medical masks.

Transit fares and front-door boarding will resume on Monday, June 15 as well.

Clarification for Paper Transfers
When paying with cash or a ticket, bus operators give customers a paper transfer as proof of payment. On the current transfer, customers may notice a message about bus routes changing on August 30. This was the previously planned start date for the new bus network in Edmonton.

Due to COVID-19, the launch of the new bus network has been moved to mid-2021. As these transfers were printed before the pandemic began, and in an effort to remain fiscally responsible, the decision was made to not reprint the transfers. These transfers will be in rotation in June, July and August.
