Last week, the Government of Alberta extended the authority for the City’s peace officers to enforce Public Health Act orders until July 2, 2021. The City of Edmonton’s face coverings bylaw is in effect until Dec. 31 or until City Council repeals the bylaw. Officers will continue to enforce the municipal bylaw until it is no longer in force.
Officers continue to focus on educating Edmontonians who aren’t wearing face coverings on the potential impacts of their decision on the health of others around them. When officers see someone not wearing a face covering, they will often offer a free mask as a first response. If these tactics do not work, enforcement and fines are considered. Enforcement has been ramped up at different phases throughout the pandemic.
A dedicated team of City of Edmonton enforcement officers, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services and partners from AHS, the Edmonton Police Service and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety have joined forces to create the Health Safety Compliance Team. The City’s enforcement officers work jointly with this team to evaluate and respond to citizen complaints related to public health restrictions that come in from 311, online systems and other channels.
