Premier condemns Russian invasion of Ukraine; apologizes for past comments

The Premier of Alberta issues the following statement:

“I categorically condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the indescribable suffering Russia has and still is inflicting upon the Ukrainian people.

“Prior to re-entering politics earlier this year, I made some ill-informed comments on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. My knowledge and opinion of this matter have drastically evolved since that time, and I apologize for those previous comments.

“I have directed my office to actively reach out to Alberta’s Ukrainian community leaders in order to ascertain immediate steps we can take to assist Ukrainian refugees to settle and integrate into communities across Alberta as quickly as possible.

“I stand with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.”

 Press Statement

Alberta NDP Deputy Leader Sarah Hoffman made the following statement in response to Danielle Smith’s apology for her remarks on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine:

“Danielle Smith has spent several days justifying her appalling remarks about Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and over those days she has caused great pain to Ukrainian Albertans, and great damage to Alberta’s reputation across Canada and around the world.

“Her apology is a positive step but we look forward to what else will be done to address the damage she caused both to Alberta communities, our economy, and our image on the world stage.”
