City of Edmonton supports wildfire evacuees – Change in REST Hours of Operations
The City of Edmonton is adjusting the hours for the Rapid Emergency Support Terminal (REST) for evacuees from Jasper and Jasper National Park, in response to fewer registrations during late evening hours.
Beginning Friday, August 9, REST will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The site is now scheduled to remain open until August 24.
Evacuees can obtain more information about Red Cross services at redcross.ca/albertawildfires or by calling 1-800-863-6582. Evacuees who need to access services are asked to visit the REST location in person (Kennedale Site, Building #2, 12814-58 Street) during operating hours.
Since July 23, the City of Edmonton has registered more than 2,400 evacuees from Jasper and Jasper National Park at the Kennedale location. The site will continue to provide coordination services for evacuees’ immediate needs, including registration for lodging and food allowance.
All registered evacuees who need accommodations have been provided lodging. The Canadian Red Cross will continue to be on-site during operating hours to coordinate off-site lodging as needed.
Donations
At this time, donations of any kind are not being accepted at the Kennedale site. The City’s Emergency Support Response Team provides all the supplies that are immediately needed.
For those wishing to contribute, monetary donations can be made through the Canadian Red Cross. The Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta will match every dollar donated to the Canadian Red Cross 2024 Alberta Fires Appeal. That means every $1 donated will become $3 to support those affected by the wildfires. Eligible donations already received will be also matched.
Transit Service for Registered Evacuees
Evacuee wristbands provided at the Kennedale site will be considered valid fare on all Edmonton Transit Service bus and LRT routes as well as on Strathcona County, St. Albert, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc and Spruce Grove transit until the end of this evacuation.
Volunteers
The Edmonton rapid emergency support terminal is fully staffed and does not require volunteers.
