NDP MLA Defends Sexually Explicit Content in School Libraries
(EDMONTON, AB) MAY 30, 2025: While United Conservatives take action to protect children from sexually explicit content in school libraries, the NDP is once again showing exactly where their priorities lie.
In response to newly announced plans to establish clear, provincewide standards for school library materials, NDP MLA Lori Sigurdson claimed this is “about banning books” and accused Alberta’s government of trying to “control public discourse.”
“What the NDP calls ‘banning books’ is what most parents would call basic common sense,” said Darby Crouch, UCP Candidate for Edmonton-Strathcona. “We’re talking about school library books that depict graphic sex acts, pornographic scenes, and other content that has no place in an elementary or junior high school. Why the NDP thinks children need access to this is beyond comprehension.”

Books found in K–12 schools in Edmonton and Calgary contain graphic illustrations and detailed language describing sex acts, masturbation, and sexually violent slurs. Some even include depictions of child molestation. These books are currently accessible to students as young as 11, or even younger in some cases.
Right now, Alberta has no consistent standard for what materials are allowed in school libraries. That’s why Alberta’s government is launching public engagement to develop clear rules that ensure all school library materials are age-appropriate. These rules will not apply to public libraries — only to school environments where children access educational resources every day.
“Parents deserve better. They deserve to know what their children are reading in school, and that the content is age-appropriate,” said Crouch. “The NDP calls that censorship, we call it protecting kids and respecting parents.”
The United Conservative Party encourages parents, educators, and concerned Albertans to participate in the public survey now available at alberta.ca.
