News Release
Edmonton — The International Migrants Alliance, the Alberta Workers Association for Research and Education (AWARE), and Public Interest Alberta (PIA) invite community members, educators, school trustees, policymakers, and solidarity allies to a special documentary screening and community conversation. Held on International Human Rights Day, this event will explore the lived realities of undocumented children in Alberta and the systemic barriers they face in accessing public education and essential services. The evening will feature the screening of a new documentary that illuminates the experiences of undocumented youth, followed by a conversation with children, advocates, and allies working to end discriminatory policies that deny children their fundamental right to education.
“Education is a right of every child,” says Dean Lumague of IMA. “Yet Alberta remains one of the only provinces where undocumented children are systematically excluded from public education due to restrictive legislation and policy barriers. While families in other provinces can send their children to school without fear, undocumented children in Alberta continue to be denied this basic human right, causing profound and preventable harm.”
The event aims to build public awareness, strengthen community connections, and mobilize collective advocacy to ensure all children, regardless of immigration status, can attend school and access the support they need to thrive. Community members, media, and elected officials are warmly encouraged to attend, learn more, and join the growing movement to support undocumented children and their families in Alberta.
“Meaningful solutions already exist,” says Bradley Lafortune, Executive Director of Public Interest Alberta. “Simple legislative and policy changes could immediately open the doors of our public schools to all children. What’s missing is political will.”
