Upcoming closure of 51 Avenue at 111 Street for track rehabilitation

The City of Edmonton will complete at-grade crossing track rehabilitation at the 51 Avenue and 111 Street intersection from June 24 to 29. This work is part of the City’s LRT Renewal Program, which focuses on replacing aging infrastructure to keep transit service operating safely and reliably. In 2025, similar rehabilitation work was successfully completed at the 111 Avenue and 106 Street intersection and at the University Avenue and 114 Street intersection.

Pre-construction work will take place from June 18 to 24 for material deliveries and welding. One of the two left-turn lanes from both north and southbound 111 Street onto 51 Avenue will be closed from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. All left-turn lanes from 111 Street onto 51 Avenue will be closed from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.

51 Avenue at 111 Street is scheduled to close at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24 and reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, June 29. Rehabilitation work will take place 24 hours a day during this time.

During construction:
Northbound 111 Street will be reduced to a single lane between Whitemud Drive and 54 Avenue. No northbound to westbound left turns from 111 Street onto 51 Avenue and 54 Avenue will be allowed. Northbound access to eastbound 51 Avenue will be maintained.
Southbound 111 Street will be reduced to a single lane from 54 Avenue to the Southgate intersection, just south of 51 Avenue.
Westbound 51 Avenue will be closed to traffic between 110 Street and 111 Street with no access to the 51 Avenue / 111 Street intersection.
Pedestrians crossing 111 Street on either side of 51 Avenue will be detoured to 54 Avenue to the north and Southgate Station to the south.
Nearby residents may experience overnight noise, but every effort will be made to reduce impacts. Motorists are encouraged to check the Traffic Disruptions Map and plan their route accordingly.

Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) LRT impacts and bus replacement service

Capital Line LRT service will be suspended between South Campus and Century Park Stations for track rehabilitation. Replacement bus service will run between these stations for the full duration of the closure, from 5:10 a.m. on June 25 until 1:30 a.m. on June 29. Regular LRT service will resume at the start of service on June 29.

On Thursday, June 25 and Friday, June 26, replacement buses will run approximately every seven to 10 minutes. During peak hours, from 6:15 to 8:45 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m., buses will run every three minutes.

On Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28, replacement buses will run every seven to eight minutes. Starting at 7 p.m., buses will run every 10 minutes until the end of service.

On Saturday, June 27, replacement bus service will extend to Government Centre Station. From 9 p.m. until the end of service, southbound trains will turn around at Government Centre. Replacement buses will run every 10 minutes between Government Centre and Century Park stations. Work unrelated to the track rehabilitation will also take place to make use of the closure.

Locations of all LRT replacement bus stops are listed at edmonton.ca/TransitAlerts.

ETS bus impacts and detours

Bus detours will come into effect Wednesday, June 24 at 10 p.m.
Minor detours will be in place for southbound Route 9 and Route 9-Owl.
Major detours will be in place for Route 55 and Route 706, especially westbound on 51 Avenue.
Buses will stop at their usual bays at Southgate Transit Centre, except for Route 9-Owl and the Century Park LRT replacement bus.
Route 9-Owl and the Century Park LRT replacement bus will use a temporary stop on the west side of 111 Street, south of the stairwell and elevator.
Riders will be notified of transit impacts through a public service announcement, on-site signage, social media and station posters.

Regular LRT maintenance and renewal projects are important to providing safe, reliable and efficient service. The City appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding while this work is completed.
