Emergency closure of High Level Bridge west sidewalk


Recent heavy rainfall has caused a slope failure on the northwest side of the High Level Bridge near Ezio Faraone Park. To identify and safely repair the issues contributing to erosion, EPCOR and the City of Edmonton will temporarily close the west sidewalk on the High Level Bridge and the northwest bridge approach from 97 Avenue today at noon. This closure is expected to take approximately three days.

While this work is underway, pedestrians must use the southeast staircase and then cross over to the west sidewalk to fully cross the bridge.

The closure is necessary to allow crews to safely access the site, remove the sidewalk and road, clear blocked drainage infrastructure and complete repairs that will help stabilize the slope.

The northwest sidewalk closure will significantly affect pedestrians and cyclists, as it is one of Edmonton’s busiest active transportation connections across the North Saskatchewan River.

The High Level Bridge southeast sidewalk up to Saskatchewan Drive remains closed due to slope stability concerns following recent heavy rainfall. The southeast staircase and east sidewalk up to the closure have reopened to provide limited pedestrian access across the bridge. However, this route is not accessible for people using wheelchairs, scooters or other mobility devices. Cyclists using this route will be required to carry their bikes or use the staircase bike rails.

People walking, rolling and cycling should plan ahead and use alternate river crossings while this work is underway. Please follow all posted signage and use caution when travelling in the area.

The City recognizes that these closures will be disruptive and appreciates the public’s patience while this safety work is completed.
