Extreme heat response activated today and air quality response extended


The City of Edmonton is activating its extreme heat weather response to help keep vulnerable people safe during the expected hot weather in the coming days. The activation starts today at 9 a.m. and is expected to end on Saturday, July 25 at 9 a.m. The response may be extended if extreme conditions continue.

Based on updated weather forecasts, the current poor air quality weather activation is extended to Thursday, July 23 at 9 a.m. As weather conditions change, subsequent alerts may be sent to advise of changes to the activation timeline.

The extreme heat response is activated when daytime temperatures are forecast to be 29 C or higher for at least three days in a row.

During extreme heat, helping people avoid dehydration is critical. Providing access to drinking water and cool places to rest is essential to the City’s response.

Water stations
Potable water is available 24 hours a day at 29 water stations attached to fire hydrants across the city. A complete list of water stations is available here.

Additional measures
Peace Officers will carry water bottles to distribute to vulnerable people in need.
Open City facilities, including libraries, pools and recreation centres, are available throughout the summer to anyone needing relief from the heat.

Check on older family members, friends and neighbours.
If you are concerned about someone outside in the heat, please call:
211 and press 3 for the 24/7 Crisis Diversion team. They can assist individuals who may be in distress and provide transportation to social service agencies.
911 if someone is in serious distress or in cases of emergency.

Sector Emergency Response
The City’s extreme weather response supplements existing measures implemented by the Sector Emergency Response group, a collaboration of more than 25 agencies working to keep Edmonton’s most vulnerable people safe during adverse weather conditions.

The extreme weather response implements City Policy C620 to ensure the
health and safety of all Edmontonians, particularly those vulnerable to severe weather.
