Waste Services’ winter collection schedule starts November 3
Starting November 3, seasonal service changes will begin for curbside collection and Eco Stations.
Curbside collection
In the winter, residents alternate which cart they set out for collection each week. The garbage cart goes out one week and the food scraps cart the next. Recycling continues to be collected weekly.
Collecting food scraps every other week reflects reduced winter demand, driven by a sharp decrease in yard waste and fewer food scrap odours during colder months. Switching to the winter schedule reduces City of Edmonton fleet emissions and helps keep utility rates stable by managing waste collection costs.
To make winter waste collection easier and safer for everyone, including collectors, residents are encouraged to:
Clear snow and ice off their carts, including the wheels.
Use a bag of their choice in the food scraps pail or a paper liner in the food scraps cart to prevent food scraps from freezing to the cart.
Shovel a one-metre space around their cart.
Set carts out for collection one metre beside or in front of windrows.
Store carts against a fence or wall away from cold winds when not set out for collection.
Eco Stations
After Saturday, October 31, Eco Stations will shift to winter hours of operation, running Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eco Stations will be closed November 1 and 2, and will open Tuesday, November 3 with the new hours. Winter hours reflect a reduction in residents dropping off certain types of waste, such as yard waste.
Eco Stations are convenient waste drop-off sites for your batteries, electronics, household hazardous waste and more. Coronation Eco Station is closed for renovations and expected to reopen in spring 2027, but Edmontonians can drop waste off at one of three open Eco Stations located throughout the City:
Ambleside (14710 Ellerslie Rd. SW)
Kennedale (5355 127 Ave. NW)
Strathcona (5150 99 St. NW)
