UCP GOVERNMENT KILLS BILL REQUIRING PUBLIC REPORTING OF PATIENT OUTCOMES

EDMONTON – Danielle Smith and her UCP government have killed proposed legislation that would have required consistent and transparent public reporting on patient outcomes across Alberta’s health-care system.

Diana Batten, NDP MLA for Calgary-Acadia, tabled Private Members’ Bill 211, the Patient Outcomes Reporting Act. The UCP government voted down the bill Monday at second reading.

“The UCP government stopped public reporting of patient outcomes because it doesn’t want Albertans to see the impact of their cuts and mismanagement of our health-care system,” said Batten. “The UCP government already collects this information but refuses to release it because they know the reality is outcomes for patients have gotten worse under the UCP. Albertans pay for that information to be gathered, and we all have a right to see it.”

Bill 211 would have required public reporting of patient outcomes and increased government accountability by requiring the UCP’s plethora of health ministers to act on the data and develop a plan for improving patient outcomes.

“Danielle Smith promised to fix health care in 90 days,” concluded Batten. “More than four years later Albertans are still asking: are patients getting better, is care improving, are people getting the results they need? Albertans deserve answers, but all they get from the UCP under Danielle Smith is distractions and concealment of the information they have a right to know.”
