New official Alberta licence plates hit the road
For the first time in more than 40 years, Alberta has a new official licence plate, with a “Strong and Free” motto.
Starting November 9, Albertans can visit their local registry to get the province’s new official licence plate, featuring the iconic Moraine Lake. The new licence plate embraces the theme “Strong and Free,” reflecting Alberta’s bold identity, economic strength and deep-rooted provincial pride. The theme also pays tribute to Alberta’s Latin motto and serves as a nod to Canada’s national anthem.

Alberta’s new official licence plate, featuring Moraine Lake, is available at registry agents starting November 9.
“The wait is over, and Alberta’s new licence plate is officially hitting the road. Albertans chose the iconic Moraine Lake to showcase our Strong and Free spirit. It’s a plate Albertans can proudly show off, whether driving to work, the lake or across the country.”Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction
If an Albertan wants to replace their current plate for the new licence plate once it is released, they can voluntarily pay a $20 government fee and a $15 registry agent service charge. Alternatively, Albertans can obtain a new plate on their vehicle registration renewal date for a $15 registry agent service charge and applicable renewal fees. Motorists may also continue using the previous licence plate once the new licence plate is brought onboard, provided it is still in good condition.
