ETS adjusts service for back to school
It’s back to school time and Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) has students covered with several service changes to handle the increased number of riders, effective Sunday, September 1.
There are significant changes to the School Special bus route numbering system for this school year. The majority of School Special bus routes will now operate as a branch of a regular ETS route that serves the same area as a former School Special. Some routes have multiple branches that serve different schools. ETS advises students to plan their trips via Google Maps, Transit App or the ETS Trip Planner.
New route branches will be identified with an “S” next to the route number on the destination sign, along with the name of the final school on its trip. These trips will also be identified by an “S” in route brochures and transit planning apps. ETS will continue to operate 29 School Specials under the 600 and 800 series route numbers. 12 School Special routes were cancelled due to low ridership.
ETS plans and adjusts service schedules five times a year to improve service and efficiencies for riders. The fall adjustments improve transfer schedules to and from the LRT, restore seasonal bus trips reduced in summer and return regular schedules for Capital and Metro Line trains (5/10 minutes during peak hours and 15 minutes during midday and after 7:30 p.m.).
Early September is always a busy time for transit service and vehicle traffic. Riders are encouraged to plan ahead and leave extra time to get to their destinations safely.
