Celebrating the Lunar New Year: Premier Smith
Premier Danielle Smith issued the following statement on the start of the Lunar New Year:
“Today, more than one-quarter of the world’s population will mark the beginning of the Lunar New Year. While customs vary from culture to culture and from family to family, Lunar New Year is a time to spend with those you love and look to the future with hope.
“At this time of year, Asian communities across Alberta mark the beginning of the Lunar New Year as we celebrate the past year and welcome the future.
“On the Chinese zodiac, Jan. 22 marks the end of the Year of the Tiger and the start of the Year of the Water Rabbit. The water rabbit is seen as smart, adaptable to changing conditions and resilient. As we step into the new year, may we all meet the challenges that face us with hope, prosperity and calm.
“One of Alberta’s great strengths is the diversity of its people, and cultural traditions like Lunar New Year are part of what makes our province such a great place to live. Our province is home to many different communities with different beliefs, traditions and celebrations. When we share in the celebrations of the various cultures of our neighbours, we are helping build stronger communities and a stronger province.
“Happy Lunar New Year to all those celebrating today. May you remain inspired and hopeful throughout this new year and may it bring you, your family and friends peace, happiness and prosperity.”
