Diwali and Bandi Chor Diwas

Associate Minister of Multiculturalism Muhammad Yaseen issued the following statement in celebration of Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas:

“Today, I join Albertans in celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and Bandi Chhor Divas, the Sikh Day of Liberation. I extend warm wishes to everyone marking these occasions.

“Bandi Chhor Divas marks the release of Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh Guru, from Gwalior Fort. He secured freedom for 52 imprisoned kings alongside him. His compassion reminds us to uphold freedom and justice for all.

“That spirit of compassion also shines through Diwali’s message of renewal, gratitude and new beginnings.

“Celebrated by millions of people around the world, Diwali is a time of joy, reflection and renewal. Across its many traditions, Diwali carries enduring messages of light overcoming darkness, hope, renewal and compassion.

“The Hindu, Sikh, Jain and other communities who celebrate Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas enrich our province through their traditions, contributions and commitment to family, community and service. Celebrations like this bring people together and foster understanding. They strengthen the connections that make Alberta a welcoming place to call home.

“As families and friends gather to light diyas (small clay oil lamps), share meals, exchange gifts and create cherished memories, may this time bring peace, happiness and prosperity to all who celebrate.

“On behalf of Alberta’s government, I wish you and your loved ones a joyful Diwali, a meaningful Bandi Chhor Divas and a bright and hopeful year ahead.”
