Alberta students rank among world’s best
Alberta students continue to be among the highest achievers in Canada and the world, according to 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results.
The latest PISA results show Alberta’s 15-year-old students are among the top performers in Canada and internationally. Alberta ranked first among provinces in science and reading and second in mathematics, behind only Quebec, while scoring above both the Canadian and international averages in all three subjects.

They are a testament to the hard work of students, teachers, families and school communities across our province. Alberta’s results were also comparable to those of leading education systems such as Singapore, Japan, Korea and Estonia, with several results statistically tied.

Continued participation in PISA provides valuable insight into how students are performing compared to their peers across Canada and other countries, benchmarks student achievement against national and international standards, identifies areas of strength and supports ongoing improvements in curriculum and classroom instruction.

PISA is conducted every four years and assesses the performance of 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics and science.
PISA 2025 included 83 countries.
Alberta students achieved an average score of 520 in science, leading among Canadian provinces and above the OECD average of 482.
Alberta students achieved an average score of 499 in reading, leading among Canadian provinces and above the OECD average of 461.
Alberta students achieved an average score of 489 in mathematics, leading among Canadian provinces and above the OECD average of 463.
